What To Do When Your Marketing Feels Inauthentic

Trust and Use Your Voice

Many of you know that I speak at different events on a variety of topics.

  • Need a talk on authentic marketing and how to actually do better storytelling? I’ve got you covered.

  • Want to explore self-trust and undoing the stories we all tell ourselves out of shame, fear, and guilt? I’m in.

  • Ready to be more of who you really are and less of who you were conditioned to be in your brand, business, and life? Let’s get to the heart of it.

From leading with authenticity to how to ditch BS marketing and salesy-sleaze, I love to go past buzzwords to teach people to use their purpose, creativity, and voice to share their values and the transformations they foster.

(have an event and need insights? let’s chat.)

I believe in this so much that I pulled the plug at the last minute on my email for the past two weeks, writing this to my assistant (the amazing Darlene):

“I’m writing the speaking engagement content, but it feels inauthentic given the fact that our Earth is literally on fire, the entire NE is breathing in smoke, and there was a mass shooting here in Richmond the other day at a high school graduation and many more that are happening hourly.”

The world is always in turmoil – there is always something unspeakable and horrible happening. The opposite is true as well and the goodness and kindness of people shine through every day.

Last week I took time to reflect.

I also took time to thoughtfully mention, at all of my speaking engagements, topics that are more important to me than maintaining an active social media presence every day or an email presence every week: guns in America; how it is our job to continue to deconstruct white supremacy and dismantle racist and ableist structures; how creativity, art, and connection can change capitalism and patriarchy; and I’m sure I got in something about trusting and listening to women (all women - trans women are women) and stop legislating them quite literally to death.

I don’t say these things to virtue-signal, for recognition, or to close the door on conversations. I’m also probably doing this imperfectly, but am committed to continuing.

I say these things as a reminder that the most important thing I can do today to uplift, transform, and build a better tomorrow is to use my voice.

We all have the power to use our voices, to listen, and to thoughtfully engage in discourse.

That’s the power of communication.

Communication (listening and speaking) is the fastest way to connect with others and transform our environments.

This is why I spend my life helping people understand their stories, tell better ones, and rescript the ones that aren’t serving them or the world.

It is my gift and my craft. And if I can use my voice to help others use theirs, then that’s what I’m here for.

(yep, I imperfectly ended with a preposition)

xox,

Michelle

P.S. In a moment of transformation and ready to use your voice? Ditch BS marketing, tell authentic (and converting) stories, and get a comprehensive marketing content identity and strategy through some brand magic.

P.P.S One spot left for June 24th Recapture Day Retreat. Use code PLAYTIME & Recapture Childlike Wonder.
