magic is always waiting for you
Look inside, it’s always there…
I’m writing this email to you sitting under the full ceiling skylight at Disney’s Polynesian Resort from not-as-cold-as-Richmond-but-still-damn-chilly Orlando, FL.
To be honest, I’ve been dreading this visit to the “Magic Kingdom” for a couple of reasons —
I hate logistics and detail planning, which happens ad nauseum when a group is involved,
I just got back to work after a two-week holiday break (and a limited work week due to water issues!) and taking another break feels excessive,
Disney is expensive and complicated — everything is done via a not-so-handy app and aptly named “magic this” and “magical that.” What that really means is that $$$ is flying out of my wallet like it’s tethered to Aladin’s magic carpet,
I want to delight my clients and work on my business, and it feels like there is a mountain of work waiting for me and —
I feel like there isn’t enough time to just get everything under control so I can rest and take a quick break and enjoy the magical moments that undoubtedly would unfold if only I was finished with all this stuff…
Then, this morning as I was thinking about how to fix our latest magical snafu, Tinkerbell popped in and bibbity-bobbity-b*!c% slapped me with her wand.
Well, not literally.
But Mario appeared as if by magic to delightfully listen, help, share some of his magic, and send me on the way with a bonus gift of a sweet Tinkerbell pin telling me to notice the magic all around me.
The situation isn't important here, but what is important is this:
Even when things are not going according to plan, when time is tight, when things seem to be unraveling,
(even when water goes out, fires rage, wars don’t cease, and politics feel like a portent of harder things to come)
Magic is all around us because it is within each of us. It’s ours to share as freely as we wish.
Magic doesn’t come from tools, tchotchkes, or things. We don’t have to wait for the moments when things are done, perfectly organized, and “under control” (as if!). We don’t have to be in a special place or experiencing something new.
The magic is always here now — in our communities, in the people we meet, in our ordinary lives.
Yes, there is plenty of work to do to make the world more equitable, accessible, loving, kind, and just. And we can do that work as we undo whatever stories we tell ourselves that keep us from seeing the magic that is present today.
I hope you take some time today to notice that you, my dear, are magic, too.
xox,
Michelle
