Life (and marketing) is based on your relationship to YOU
relationship marketing, but make it deep…
If you missed my email on liminal spaces and how to make progress when the world is a dumpster fire, find it here.
The longest relationship you have in this life is with yourself.
I didn’t always think this and used to prioritize every other relationship FIRST and take whatever was left over, if anything, for myself.
I also didn’t realize then that all of the relationships that I have with others are based on the one that I have with myself.
I did a video on this that got popular on TikTok and garnered much love (and a backhanded compliment) on Instagram.
The video summary is this: If we don’t take the time to examine and heal the unhelpful stories we tell ourselves and get curious about who we are beyond our conditioning and subconscious programming, we’ll never have the relationships we want most — with ourselves or with the people who mean the most to us.
TL:DR: If we don’t address the internal, our external experiences reflect that.
(Check out how to start reflecting in the video.)
This concept is true for your brand & marketing, too.
Many of us started our businesses because we offer services people need, a purpose that connects us to our work, and a passion to help others using our skillset.
But in keeping up with the pace of work and life, we often don’t make time to reconnect with the foundations of our work and the transformations we truly facilitate…
Which keeps us stuck in a cycle of doing, instead of serving.
My clients hire me because they are overwhelmed in the DOING cycle and want to stop approaching their marketing from a place of pressure and stress.
They want to articulate their brand experience, values, and services in a way that is meaningful and authentic.
They’re also sick of what I call “drive-by marketing advice,” — you know, the expert that tells you how to hack the algorithm by posting one type of content 3-5x per day in a variety of formats or the ones that sell their formula and plan that doesn’t translate to how anyone else performs and achieves.
Building a brand and business foundation based on our INTERNAL purpose, skills, and abilities only works when we communicate how we deliver on our promises EXTERNALLY.
If we don’t consistently revisit the internal spaces and approach our marketing authentically using our values, voice, and vision as a guide, we’re just doing drive-by marketing that doesn’t truly connect us with our audience or help us help them.
If you struggle with what to say and how to say it so that people “get it,” it may be time to reset and refresh your brand content and foundations.
If you are overwhelmed with the cadence and pace of marketing — and dread showing up online — it may be time for a strategy that’s based on YOU and your business, not some plan from the internet.
And if you need a brand writer, strategist, and thought partner to help you approach these things confidently so you can feel MORE LIKE YOU and less like a marketer, I’d love to help.
Here’s to clarity, authenticity, and putting YOU first —
xox,
Michelle
